CA Vehicle Retirement Program
Wondering if anyone here has used this before and what were the results?
Car Scrappage - Voluntary Accelerated Vehicle Retirement
I failed smog this past Saturday with my 1990 Stanza GXE. Wayy too much oil blowing past the rings now @ 273,xxx miles. Been running thick oil and stop smoke additive for a while which has helped but finally isn't doing anything anymore. Car still runs w/ out any major problems an is totally driveabe.
Not going to try to fix it so I mailed in an application for Vehicle Retirement. Hoping to get some extra cash for this instead of letting pick n pull have it. Supposed to take about 30 days to find out if I've been approved for the program.
If any members here have gone through with this before I'd like to know how the experience was. Easy or PITA? Also not sure if the $1000-1500 is a check cut to you or a tax writeoff?
Some input would be awesome, thanks!

Got the same letter for my Roadmaster. Declined it, 3 months later someone t-boned me and I got it properly appraised, walked away w $8000 just for the car.
The check is straight to you last I checked.

They cut my mom a $1000 check on the spot for the Taurus. We did just before they required the failed SMOG (when they would take any car you owned for $1000).
Once you are approved, take the letter and the car to one of the wrecking yards on the list. They check the car, mark it up, do some paper work, take your title and give you a check.

They'll give you the check on the spot and yes you can take certain parts off the car. Heres a checklist of whats required/not required. We've sent many customers that way with old vehicles not worth fixing.
Vehicle Equipment Requirements
-All doors
-Hood lid
-Dashboard
-Windshield
-At least one side window glass
-Driver’s seat
-At least one bumper
-Exhaust system
-All side and/or quarter panels
-At least one headlight, one taillight,
and one brake light
Vehicle Operational Requirements
-Vehicle must be driven to a CAP-contracted
dismantler under its own power.
-Vehicle engine starts readily through ordinary
means without the use of starting fluids or
external booster batteries
-Vehicle drivability is not affected by any body,
steering, or suspension damage.
-Vehicle is able to drive forward a minimum
distance of 10 yards under its own power.
-Interior pedals are operation

They used to be pretty lenient. I had one customer that spent about 15mins trying to start a car with a really bad headgasket with a booster battery on it. finally got it running and moved it front and back 10 yards and they gave him a check.
