Why does it matter when the month ends?

Renewals aren't due at the end of the month, they're due on the anniversary of the day you bought your car. I bought mine on March 18, 2001, so my renewal is due on March 18 every year.

Is there something else I'm missing about the relevance of the end of the month?

Yup.. has nothing to do with the end of the month.. Your Registration can actually be expired even if your tags are for the current month..

Hmmmmmmm I just mailed in my 3rd release of liability for a car I sold in March of last year. According to AAA this is what I must do. Each time I include photo copies of the last pile of papers. DMVROX.

Two years into owning my Chevy truck, I got pulled over and yanked out of my truck at gunpoint because the plates that DMV had sent said "...4812" and were registered to a Ford in Sonoma. My truck registration however said "...4182".
So thanks to them I got my *** beat by CHP. Then when I went to DMV to have my truk re-plated they explained it's happened several times!! WTF mate!!?!

DMV sucks...*******s....

Yes, the DMV sucks, but you can avoid a lot of hassle by

A. Using AAA
B. Reading the fine print.

walking in to the dmv though may me long and dreadful is still the most efficient way and the paperwork you receive in the mail should explain late fees and all that good crap. my late fees would only apply 5 days after the original registered date. soooo you should go into the dmv office to ask and find out wtf is going on :-D

Ok what ever, it says what it says. I called today. It was due yesterday, my tag says Feb. Give a brotha a break much? My bank, CC give grace periods. Hell, Block Buster Video will let things slide and they're going bankrupt.
I guess the only way to catch a break is to be fat, dumb, illegal, gay, or colored.
