Boost gauge needle is erratic at idle (was: Need your expert advice)
I installed a Prosport Boost Gauge using the wrxtra boost gauge install kit (the one that came with the gauge looked cheap. I was very impressed with the workmanship of the kit from wrxtra.com). I followed the instructions from wrxtra.com and installed the "T' fitting into vacuum line coming off (or in) of the BOV. I used the clamps that came with the kit and clamped down all three sides of the "T" fitting. I took the hose coming off the bottom of the "T" and fed it through the fire wall ( doesn't go straight the the firewall. I have it zipped tied to some other hoses to make it look clean. The instructions said to do this.) and then to the dash where the boost gauge is located. I hooked it up the the boost gauge by fitting the hose over the needle on the boost gauge and clamping it down.
So here is my problem, at idle the needle flutters. It is not fluttering big (as in needle travel) but just sits there and flutters at about 20 inHg. Once i give it alittle gas it stops fluttering. The gauge seems to be reading right. I don't see alot of boost until 2nd gear and at WOT through 3rd and 4th I am seeing about 13psi. When I get into 4th at full boost it seems like it flutters at 13psi also.
I don't really know what to think. I don't think I have a vacuum leak, but I guess it could be. Would car vibrations cause it to flutter since the hose is zip tied to other hoses?
Is it safe to drive my car?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Generally on WOT coming close to the end of the power band near red line, the boost should decrease (for safety, I believe). If I'm not mistaken, your car should read around -9 psi while at idle.
I have a Defi BF boost gauge that reads in bar, it doesn't flutter at all at idle, but boost does taper towards the end.
I think it might help if you attached a photo of what it looks like.
Last: I have a brass t-fitting if you feel the nylon one isn't sufficient (and this one won't snap either, I've snapped a nylon one by accident). I had to buy them in a package of 5, so let me know if you need one, we can work something out.

Hey whats up Charlie,
Long time no see. I have been out of town about every wednesday for the last 2 months. I am going to try and make it out this week.
Anyways, the install kit i bought from wrxtra.com came with a brass fitting.
I just did about 3 hard runs to see then I got scared to drive my car untill I get this fixed. So I don't know if it was tapering off at WOT. It could be though.

that's what you get for using a mechanical boost gauge instead of digital.
I had a gauge that did similar jumping. it's mostly just poor assembly and part quality IMHO.

Only the Idle video expresses the problem I am having. The other videos were to make sure nothing else is going wrong which I assume there isn't. If you look closely at the idle video (might be too blurry, damn digital camera) the needle sits there and flutters or vibrate. I am assuming at idle the needs should in a relatively fixed location. I don't have exprerience with boost gauge because my WRX is my first turbo car.

With mechaincal gauges you will have some movement at idle.
The car when idling does not put out a 100% constant vacuum.
I wouldn't be surprised to see the new gauge do the samething once you get it installed.

Well....might as well try. I really like the way the gauges look and I have the matching Oil Pressure and EGT Gauge. So...I guess I'm stuck with it if the new one does the same thing.
