My step mom has had 2, we had problems with one, the engine blew on our E30 325 with 150,000+ miles, the E36 was just fine. My brother has a 03 E46 325i, no problems, that includes a round trip from San Francisco to Boston, several round trips to Southern California and Arizona and 2 round trips to Salt Lake City. My Dad had a '99 528i, still says to this day best car he ever owned, 3 years, no problems at all. I have a '08 135i, had it for 14 months, zero problems and my Dad now has an '08 550i for a year now, also no problems. That is how I argue the reliability of BMW. That is a lot more experience than 7 years and one car. My RS was much more of a maintenece nightmere than any BMW my family has owned.

And I am ROTFL about the n00b comment, that brightened my day.

Sorry dude. There are just somethings on Bimmers that are meant to wear out. You might want to have a looksie at the lower control are bushings on the the e46. If they haven't been changed, they're bad... Also check the PS lines, it's probably leaking, also check the IAC hose, it's cracked. The list goes on. Everything has been replaced multiple times with OEM parts with Factory service. These are know parts that fail regularly. Check the dealer stock of these items. There's plenty. 'Cause they fail regularly. The thermo housing alone $117 for a thermostat. Fails regularly. BMW a great car but they have a fair amount of problems. What I find interesting, the parts that fail, one expect would last the life of the car.

The E46 has been in for regularly scheduled maintenence. No problems. It has even endured 2 Boston winters and it runs without any problems.

Dude that sucks.

My mom has an O8 535i with 27k miles and we just had to get it towed to the dealer. My dad was driving it at the time and said it started running like **** and "felt like it had water in the gas". Turns out the "fuel pressure regulator" (not fuel pump my dad says) went out. WTF? 27k miles?? Are you serious??

California has a law that lets you return cars within 3 days of ownership...
