Thumbs up Big thanks from IDP Racing

Independent Datapoint Racing would like to thank the many sponsors that made it possible for us to compete in the 2006 edition of the Rim of the World Rally. Without their hard work and support, we would never have been able to have such a successful campaign at this great event. The car was great, and the service crew was even greater, repairing a severely leaking radiator in less than 10 minutes on Saturday afternoon.

Gruppe-S did a fantastic job prepping and servicing the car. Our 2002 WRX rally car had received a new powerplant, a 2.5 ej25 from a Forrester XT. Mike’s dyno tuning was able to extract 294 ft. lbs. of torque and 220 w.h.p. out of the restricted vf30 turbo (NASA Rally regulations require a 32mm turbo inlet restrictor).

Friday evening saw our first stage miles since Rim 2005, nearly a year ago. Some rust had to be shaken off, but by the end of the very rough evening, we had moved up 6 places, from 34th to 28th.

Saturday morning arrived far too early, and the first two stages of the day claimed the first damage to the car. The rocks and rough stone surfaces of Del Sur ripped the rear skidplate completely off the car, despite the rugged construction of the custom Flatline Fabrication unit. The second run through the super special stage was more exciting than normal, as a mistimed takeoff from the jump ramp brought our car down hard on the nose. No immediate damage was detected, and the car seemed driveable so we soldiered on. After the following stage, Mike noticed that the radiator was leaking and we were losing our coolant. With no spare radiator (or eggs) in the car, we had no choice but to continue while keeping a close eye on the temperature gauge. With a small amount of luck on our side, the water in the radiator lasted through the next two stages and most of the way back to service. The car began overheating just as we pulled in to the time control, and we had to push it from the control zone to our service spot. James, Tommy, and Andre (believe it or not) were quickly able to spot the cause of the leak – a hose had been knocked loose by the rough landing on the super special. The hose was corrected and Steve Lock (of Goto Racing fame) quickly secured a jug of replacement water for us. With mere minutes to spare, we jumped into the car and headed off for the next time control.

As the day progressed, Mike was getting more and more comfortable with calling the stage notes provided to us by the organizers, and our speeds continued to increase. By the end of the day, we had moved up to 15th overall for our best finish to date.

Back at the fairgrounds, a rocking party ensued and a good time was had by most. ;-)

As the “IDP Random Spot” proclaimed this year, “TIA!” Thanks in advance, indeed!

Crucial Racing - Jeremy
Smog Fix and Auto repair - Mark

Lastly thanks to the guys that came to hang out and support us (drink all the beer, eat all the food etc etc )
