They can't legally detain him based on that... They can question him, but they can't cuff him unless they had reasonable suspicion that HE was in fact the one who stabbed the person. I'd take that to court if I were you... YOU WILL win.
That is based on the limited information that I have about the incident... I don't know what other factors were involved, but I'm sure the officers found something else to believe that he was the one that committed the crime.
(To make that clear: White guy in forester stabs lady and flees. Cops can't "DETAIN" every white guy in a forester... They can pull them over for whatever traffic violation they see (and trust me, no matter how stock you are, you're violating a traffic law) and question them... However, to detain them (cuffs, etc) is NOT legal unless they have reasonable suspicion to do so... Like if a knife was visible or you were drunk, etc, etc...)

This morning about 7:30 North bound 280, Grey STI with silver wheels, you looked over as I passed, I tried to give the duce but not sure if you saw, I coulnd't see you behind me. I was the SRP Wagon on gold in the carpool lane.
