Bay Area ECU Tuner
#18
Guys thanks for all the feedback.
Yup
He was the first guy i talked with. Unfortunately i dont want to shell out $1200 for an ECU tune. Right now i'm running the stock ECU.
Talk with autohq on getting your ecutek tuned. Shiggy is the director of ecutek japan.
Do you have your stock rom file from your ecutek tuner?
I can hook you up with a quick road tune. We can reflash your ecu back to stock and keep your ecutek lic intacked. I have the ecutek software for doing such.
Openecu is the way to go if I had to do it all over again. Cheap, As much control as ecutek, More control then cobb ap and I have full control over my ecu.
When shiggy comes back over from japan. I plan to have him retune my car using ecutek.

We did change the DP. S&S Auto Concept in Concord did the install and apparantly the DP they put on was too small, so now there's an exhaust leak and it burned up the gasket. I've been trying to get a hold of Andrew at S&S for a month now (phone, email, cell) and nothing!

Damn, that sucks. Oh well, at least Legson is still there, hes a cool guy. S&S always did work on my Subarus, good shop in my experience.

Hi Carnerd,
Before spending your money on a retune come by the shop and let Kevin diagnose your engine light. Once we know what the problem is, we can help you figure out the simplest and/or best solution and give you some options. If you do need a tuner and are already using EcuTek, Kevin can fix any small problems for you. If you want to be completely custom retuned by Shiggy when he returns, great. If you want to use another qualified tuner in the area, we are happy to refer you to a good tuner. Hopefully, though, your problem can be solved without a tuner, especially if you already own an EcuTek license.
If you do already own an EcuTek license, don't let anyone convince you to switch to Cobb unless that is something you already want. Any tuner can make arguments about what is best, blah blah blah. And, in fairness, different tuners have different experiences.
Give me a call or come by to the shop, we can talk to you and check out the car, tell you what is up with your car, options to address the problem, and let you decide what you think is best for your car. If you want us to help you take care of anything, we will do the work right the first time, a very fair price.
Lastly, a few issues on this tread. An EcuTek license is less expensive than Cobb AP. Off the self, Cobb offers additional features, through the AP, to customers. However, as Ed and others have stated here before, most Cobb users are not making full use of those features. For most people, including me, a Cobb user, the extra features are useless or almost never used. Also, if you have EcuTek, we can take care of any problems you have for you at AutoHQ. Shiggy does not have to be in town for us to take care of many potential issues. Kevin knows what he is doing tuning, but chooses not to offer tuning to new customers out of respect for his friend and master tuner Shiggy. And our Shiggy-tuned customers don't have many issues that need anything done, because a Shiggy-tune is problem-free and reliable.
Many tuners like Cobb for a number of reasons, among with is that Cobb is easier to tune, the company has done good marketing, making Cobb easier to sell. Customers often feel an appeal about Cobb due to a do-it-yourself feeling, such as reflashes, clearing engine codes, off the shelf maps, etc. The first time I cleared my own engine code with Cobb was one of the happiest moments I've ever had in my car. However, before I had Cobb, when I was using EcuTek, I never had an engine light (I'm not saying that Cobb causes engine lights). My point is that if you have a good tune and you are using EcuTek, most people will have no problems and no reason to want for the extra do-it-yourself features that Cobb offers.
But it's up to you. I just want to save the most money you can while making sure your car is running good and safely. If you want to let us take a look for you, great.
Thanks,
Brandon

The downpipe+cat back explains the CEL though. Get yourself an ODB-II code reader and tell us what the actual CEL code is. CEL codes are very well documented. google search result: http://www.clubwrx.net/forums/mainte...s-wrx-sti.html

And i'm not sure why people think i have an ECUTek tune... I DO NOT have an ECUtek tune. I was simply looking for something like that. Dan at Vivid quoted me $500 for an ECUTek and that's where i'm trying to be tune wise. Thanks for all the help guys.

The way you said it was fine, just but bit unclear is all. In any case, don't you want to see what CEL's you're car is throwing before getting a tune? It seems like a logical first step. I mean, a reflash might make the CEL turn off, but it doesn't mean your car is magically fixed.
