What;s great about hammy is you'll be above all the haze... 4,200+ elevation will be over any sort of fog you may encounter.

High clouds however, no.

It's cuz we live closer to Mt. Hammy =p

Is it really necessary to go that far up? Or do we just need a clear sky?

Its not just the height, it's how dark it is there, and you wont find a place near the general bay area darker then a high elevation mountain.

I was just going to go up far enough for clear skies/as little light pollution as possible.

Taking one car would alleviate the leading/following issue. I'm sure we'll all be willing to help each other out with techniques. What kind of camera are you using? Ideal "star trail" shots have longer exposure times (10+ minutes) so you'll need a camera that you can do a "bulb" (sometimes just listed as "B") shutter speed and a tripod.

Livermore has clear skies and a solid westerly wind, mt. hamilton will be best choice. Mt Diablo would also be badass if you hike up it maybe

When you put it into "m" mode, you should be able to change the shutter speed to bulb or "b" On mine it only has that option when in full manual (or "m").
