Backing plates on brake pads?

Are they necessary? I was installing new pads last night and just can't get the plates on one side installed. So I left them out and hoped after a day or so I can put them back in.

Will this affect my car's braking ability?

Thanks in advance.

In my experience it's not going to kill anything. They do help with squeal reduction though. But don't listen to me...some monkeys know more about it than I do.

Thx OMA.

I don't care about the squeal as long as I can live through a track event (this Thursday). Keeping my fingers and toe crossed...

Out of curiosity, was it the plate that wouldn't fit on the pad, or the complete assembly wouldn't fit back in the caliper?

hahaha, you'll live through your track event, it will be very noisy though, had a friend with an evo that lost his backing plates, drove the car daily, and it sounded like nails on a chalkboard through a megaphone

It was the complete assembly wouldn't fit back into the caliper. I pushed the pistons all the way in and the plates won't go in. I can barely fit the pads in alone. So the inside pads on both front brakes have no plates.

Wooo, that's a good sound. I'll have to turn up my stereo or wear plugs.

if you do happen to be able to fit the plates back in, don't forget the crc brake stuff (red). makes it alot more quiet.

after your trackday you will probably have worn enough pad off to be able to put the shims back on.

I thought that if you aren't using the pad shims, that you aren't supposed to have any of them installed.

Copper-based anti-sieze, in moderation, on the calipers, pins, sliding points, and all pad contact points FTW.

were they just not allowing you to put the caliper back on (as in the pads sticking out too far)? Most likely the pistons just needed to be pushed in a little more (they were a ***** when I did my pads)
