B9 Tribeca Tranny service question... Anyone?
Hey havent been on in a while.
So I am driving about 5k miles in April, to Nebraska and back (family reunion) and 24 hours after we get back going to Disneyland. I am gonna do the 60k, service manual makes it look like a cake walk compared to the wrx so imma do it.
First 2006 B9 tribeca 61,xxx miles, stock.
2 questions:
#1 Tranny Fluid Type: Service Manual says use Subaru ATF, Castrol Transmax J, or Idemitsu ATF HP. Well castrol would have been my first choice but they dont make the Transmax J anymore. So imma go with either the Subaru ATF or the Idemitsu. Any suggestions, does castrol make anything equivalent to those 2. I dont wanna get into an oil debate, I just wanna know if there is a castrol equivalent.
Copied from service manual:
Always use the recommended or equivalent ATF. Using material except recommended one or sub-
stitute would cause trouble.
Fluid
Automatic transmission fluid
SUBARU ATF
IDEMITSU: APOLLOIL ATF HP
CASTROL: TRANSMAX J
Pennzoil QuakerState: Pennzoil
ATF-J
#2 Why would only 4 quarts drain out (this is what I read on every forum), when the capacity is 9.8qts? Service manual also says only fill with amount of ATF that is drained.
Any help is appreciated, just cant find alot about the Becas in forums. I even joined sb9t.com hoping to find answers. I have never seen more than 3 people on at a time.

#1 - Why not just use Subaru fluid then?
#2 - Less would drain out because 9.8 is the overhaul capacity (eg when the transmission has just been rebuilt and totally dry). Fill with ~4qt if that's what you've read.

ok so use subaru atf...specifically made for subaru AT...and what you are describing is not a transmission fluid flush, rather a drain and fill
i do it on my girlfriends 2.5i...pop the drain plug, drain it into a container with a capacity measurement, plug it back up and then refill the transmission through the dipstick hole
just about 4 qts comes out everytime and you refill the same amount that comes out...
it does not flush the system completely, but if you do this a couple times in a short period of time, most of the old fluid is gone
her car was SUPER overdue and it was shifting really crappy...at about 60k i did a drain/fill and it felt better, at 68k i did another one and now the laggy shifts are just about gone

the reason only 4 quarts comes out is that when the car is off, some of the AT fluid gets "trapped" in the case
there is a way to do a complete flush, but you need hoses and a pump, etc

thanks eveyrone. I did end up buying the subaru ATF. But i read on the bottle its made by idemitsu so its probably the same ****. Difference im sure is the idemitsu is probably cheaper than buying from dealership.

Supposedly the subaru stuff is a specifically formulated for subaru even though its the same company...don't know where to find idemitsu for sale anyways...
And I had the same exact questions about this before doing my girlfriends transmission

Transmission Fliud For Tribecca Subaru
The reason is because the rest of the fluid is trapped in the Torque Converter. The only way to replace the entire amount of fluid correctly is to pull the transmission out and empty the torque converter.
