April 7th near San Luis Obispo - "Angel's Crest" Road Rally by ITN
Saturday, April 7th!
"Into The Night" road rally group is putting on an 8 hour PanAm/Monte Carlo-style road rally in the hills near Santa Maria, which is 4 hours from San Francisco.
You'll need a co-driver to navigate but no helmet or other safety equipment needed. I ran in one of theirs last month and it was a total blast - great, twisty roads. I'll be going to this one with my regular co-driver.
The rally starts in the daytime, but continues into the evening. It's all paved, but I hear there might be a few dirt roads we can use for shortcuts. The expected turnout is about 30 cars.
This picture was taken on the roads we'll be driving:

What's a Pan-Am/Monte-Carlo-style road rally?
You're given a map and written descriptions of checkpoints. The instructions are a bit like a scavenger hunt. The checkpoints are not perfectly described, and you'll receive hints along the way at 'standoff' points along the way. You have to arrive at checkpoints at a specific time, but how you get there is up to you.
You're allowed to get near the checkpoint early, then creep to cross the timer mark at exactly your time. Some of these go up to 13 hours (ITN's upcoming Starlite from Santa Barbara to Las Vegas). Experts get fewer clues at the standoffs, sometimes requiring orienteering skills to find the checkpoints. A big one is www.itnrally.org - there's an 8 hour one coming up near San Luis Obispo on April 7th which I and some other i-clubbers will be at. Right now, this is my favorite type.
History: Pan-Am is the American version of Monte Carlo-style rallying. In old Europe, rallies would start in multiple cities, and cars would drive to towns that may or may not have checkpoints. American GI's saw that, brought it to the states, and added the 'standoff' concept. The Pan-Am refers to the rallies which went from the States into Mexico.

hey, my dad grew up there, I think that's a good excuse to go all the way down there. This sounds like serious fun. I might have to go, especially with the chance that there will be dirt roads.

It doesn't mean that you can't map your own route (which is the whole point of this) and take a few "shortcuts" through some rather primitive roads.
Been there, done that. It's a blast, and if I didn't have to be somewhere the next morning, I'd be down for this.

Had the pleasure of experiencing some of the backroads in the Santa Maria area as a checkpoint worker at the SCCA Road Rally Nationals back in '04. I'm sure this will be a treat.

Anytime somehting like this will be closer to home? I like the thought of a tarmac rally more than a full on dirt rally... though I don't mind getting my Suby a *little* dirty.

ITN Rallies
Most ITN rallies are based in So Cal. This is the furthest north that they usually go now.
Roo is being very modest here ... he won the "Press on Regardless" award on one of his first times out with ITN, kept coming back for more and ended up writing a few rallies if I am not mistaken.
I've done quite a few of the ITN rallies and like Roo said they are just way too much fun. I was planning on working this rallye, but something else has come up, so I won't be going down this time.
Brian, yes Bryan is going. He was also crazy enough to go down almost to San Diego for the previous one!
Bryan, thanks for posting this here and drumming up some interest.

1 Week away! Latest update:
Hi, everybody,
This is a last minute ITN Rally Reminder. Saturday, April 7, 2007, at 11AM at Waller Park in Santa Maria, registration will open for ANGELS CROWN 2007. The first car will leave Start at 1:01PM and should arrive at the Finish at Chili's in Paso Robles about 9:45PM.
This is one of the most scenically beautiful courses in a long time. Not only are the wildflowers in bloom on much of the course, but so are the orchards of fruit trees. The course itself traverses some supremely quaint towns, and the roads themselves are remarkably European in character. Most roads, as usual, are of the open, sweeping variety, with a few twistier parts thrown in here and there for punctuation.
For our four wheeling friends, there will be an alternate, unpaved Course Control 3, which will take you through about 14 miles of hills and woodlands. It's very smooth and well maintained and lots of fun to drive.
Rallymaster Justin Murphy, along with David Budlong and an excellent group of checkout cars, have come up with a very interesting and exciting rally. A flyer with more complete details, and a map with directions to Registration in Santa Maria, are up on the website at www.itnrally.org. Click on EVENTS on the left or bottom toolbars. Please shoot us an email right away (if you haven't already) if you want to be there. Also, please forward this email to anyone else you think might be interested. It looks like we're going to have a very good turnout. We could use a few more people to help work the event, so if your partner has to go to Grandma's house or something, come on up and work a Rally Control. If you haven't done it before, we'll put you with an experienced captain, and you can see how rallies are put together from the inside out.
The routes and maps will be posted this week on the home page, not later than Wednesday, so you can download them in .pdf format and do all your homework before the event. Anyone can get them, so, even if you don't think you can make it, download them anyway. Maybe after you look through them, you'll decide that you must, truly must BE THERE!
We hope you'll come and join us for a picturesque and challenging afternoon and evening enjoying the best that Central California's roads have to offer.
See you at Standoff.
