1st is to make sure it fits by standing over the bike and u should be able to grab ur nuts by sticking ur hand under them
then when u sit on the seat the correct height for ur seat is so if u extend one of ur legs on the pedal almost straight down (not knee locked) so make sure u don't have to take the seatpost to the max height to reach this setting
FRAME make sure no dents or cracks are on the frame look around all the connections, cable rubs and scratches are fine
Hydraulic brakes; apply brake for 10-15 seconds to see if there's any leaks somewhere in the system, if there's a leak, the lever slowly starts getting loose and eventually hit the handlebar
Fork; look at the seals and make sure they're not busted, most of the shocks are good when u push them down but the rebound gets messed up too, so look and see if it bounces back too quickly.. some forks have rebound adjustments, uwant that to kinda work too
look at the chainrings, the shouldn't be too worn off and rounded or missing teeth
try the shifters, if there's too much resistance, u need to change the cables and lube everything... not a big deal but make sure they work!
Wheels.. pick up the bike and spin the wheel to see if the wheel is straight and not rubbing on the brake rotors, u don't want a super bent wheel ( ucan fix minor bends )
good luck!!

Is there really a big difference on a bike that is on the larger side of the scale for yourself? The only thing I see wrong so far is during the event of a fall, it will be much more dangerous than a bike that was on the smaller side of the scale. Also I have to be "careful" getting on and off and bike even though I may not have trouble riding it.
