I been using Rotella 15W40 dino in my wife's car. It's a 2001 Corolla with 180k miles. It was drinking about 2 quarts of 5W30 every 3-5k miles. It's stopped drinking so much, but still drinks some.
I use Rotella 15W40 synthetic in my car and have for about a year. 150k, no appreciable oil consumption. All you really need to do is look at the Used Oil Analyses posted at bobistheoilguy.com Rotella is good stuff.
Mobil 5W30 has been shown via Used Oil Analyses to shear to lower viscosity in WRX motors. UOA info is at 'the other forums site' if you can manage to wade through the search engine. It's not consolidated in one thread, so be prepared for some wading.
From the UOAs I've seen good oil options that aren't too expensive are:
- 0W30 castrol syn ("German Castrol" bottle is a little different from the other Castrol syns and viscosity shows at the very high end of a 30W, much higher viscosity than 5W30 Mobil1)
- Rotella syn 15W40
- Pennzoil Platinum (grade of choice, this is also a little more expensive)
Then the 'boutique' brands like Redline, RP, Amsoil, etc...
If you spend some time at bobistheoilguy.com you'll find that Mobil re-formulated Mobil1 a few years back and it took a turn for the worse. It essentially cashed in on the good rep M1 had. All of this is backed up by UOAs. I know I'm just re-stating without proof, but it's really not all in one place for easy linking. I encourage you to go read if you're interested. I think you'll come to the same conclusion I did when you look at the available data.
