We're throwin a birthday dinner for a good friend of mine, we want to have it in SF Chinatown. Anyone know of a good restaurant in that area that can host a banquet? Something not hella expensive but good. Thanks!

a dim sum dish at HV averages about $5 a dish. Plus some of the dim sum there are smaller than normal. If you want Beef Crepe, that already counts as a special dish, which is $7 right there. There's only maybe 1-2 dim sum dishes that count as small. Everything else is either Large or Special. Large is like $4.50. A plate of Fried Rice is like $14.
Your best bet is to go to New Asia. It's in the middle of Chinatown and has pretty cheap prices for decent dim sum. If you're thinking about special ordering traditional chinese banquet type dishes, it is pretty good there.

Last time I was there for a wedding banquet, it tasted pretty good

I've been to more than a few red egg & ginger parties, wedding receptions, etc. at Canton. Its not gourmet, but its pretty good. From the folks I know who've thrown the parties, they're not very wealthy, so the place isn't a bank breaker either. Seems like a good deal.

Canton Teahouse is a good value.
To be honest, if I were to put on a banquet, I'd do at one of the upscale Hong Kong-style Chinese seafood restaurants on the peninsula. ABC Seafood in Foster City, **** Yuen in Millbrae, Koi Palace in Daly City, and Parc Hong Kong in Sunnyvale come to mind (there's also the original Parc HK on Geary and 17th, but parking's a be0tch there too hehe). I'd also suggest Ton Kiang and Yank Sing in the City, but there prices are pretty high because they like to cater to rich white clientele instead of Chinese folks (but they still maintain a very authentic style of cooking). Harbor View in the Embarcadero is good too, as is the one in Rincon Center whose name I have suddenly forgotten! But I guess it's too late now huh?
