anyone know an alternative route to I-5?
i have to go to santa cruz (from san jose) tomorrow to pick up my car from the subaru dealership and then to orange county. i KNOW there will be traffic on 152 thanks to the garlic festival.
680-580 is a hell of a drive and 101 the entire way takes too long.
isn't there ANY other way to i-5 or 152 PAST the traffic? i'll take streets and country roads if i have to. i just don't want to get stuck in non moving traffic UPHILL with ACT clutch and blazing heat. plus i have to drive alone. anyone? anyone??
thanks a lot

From SC : Hwy 1 south to CA 183 (about 25 miles). 183 over to 101. 101 South to Paso Robles, then over to I-5 on CA Hwy 46. Pretty Scenic and traffic shouldn't be bad.

Heh.. I see twice as many speed traps on the 5 than I do on the 101. The normal speed on the 101 is 80 instead of 90 on the 5, but the total distance going down the 101 is shorter.
I set my CC for 14 over the limit and I never have problems. Once I set it for 20 over and I got a ticket north of Santa Barbara (my only moving violation). YMMV. If you're really worried then only go 10 over. About a month ago my gf talked me into taking the 5 down from San Jose... damn I regretted it. Too many dumb**** truck drivers in the fast lane. Took like 8 hours. Oh that was on a friday too.
I did the SC <-> OC drive once every few months when I was still in school. 101 was the general consensus among UCSC students.

okay so i've ddecided screw 5 just take 101. NOW... is it faster to take 17 back to 85 to 101 or take 1 to 101? i see a few highways that area about 12 miles from 1 to 101, but i have a feeling they might be not so safe. (i've been staring at a map for the past hour.) since i'll be going alone, everyone wants me to be safe.

i heard that 183 is a 1 lane mountain road? 'cause that crossed my mind a few times. i'm picking the car up from the dealership.... they're replacing syncros to see if maybe that'll get the clutch back into 1st gear. HEH! and this is the second time the car has been into the dealserhip for this problem in the last 3 weeks. the first place replaced the clutch but that didnt work. ACT goes back in and new syncros and gears. i dont want to be on a mountainroad and find out that the clutch still isnt working.

Given what you've said, that's the route I'd suggest.
The rest of this post dosn't apply to you anymore:
This is a subject that I have some experience with, so here are a bunch of possibilities...
The Fastest Way: 1 --> 129 --> 101N --> 25S --> Greenfield Rd (Left Turn,North) --> 152E--> 5S -->LA
The Ocean Way: Obvious; get on 1 South and stay there untill you can't, then take 101.
The Twisties 1: 1 South --> Carmel Valley Rd. -->Cahagua Rd. --> Carmel Valley Rd. --> Arroyo Seco Rd. --> G16 -->101South --> G13 North(at King City) --> 25N -->Coalinga Rd / Los Gatos Creek Rd. --> Through Coalinga to 33 --> 5South --> LA
The Twisties 2: 1 South --> Naciamento-Fergusson Rd (South of Lucia, south of Big Sur) --> G14 --> 101 South at Paso Robles (Or the 46-5 option mentioned in an earlier post).
The Earthquake Route: To Follow the San Andreas Fault, go 1 South --> 129 East --> 101North --> 25 South through Holister all the way to 198 --> 198 East --> Parkfield Grade (unpaved) -->Cholome Rd --> 46 West (about 100 yards) --> Davis Rd. --> Anette Rd. --> Biterwater Rd. -->58 East --> 7 mile Rd. --> Elkhorn Rd (unpaved) --> Soda Lake Rd. --> 168 West (v short distance) -->Cerro Noroeste Rd becomes Portero Hwy becomes Cuddy Valley Rd becomes Frazier Park Rd. --> 5 South.
The Dirty Route 1: Go to Hwy 25 South of Hollister as above --> Quien Sabe Rd. -->Santa Anna Valley Rd. --> Browns Valley Rd (Gravel) --> J1 West -->25 South --> San Benito Cut-off --> Bearing Right becomes Old Hernandez Rd (unpaved). -->Coalinga Rd (right turn) --> 25 South (Again) --> 198 East... as above in the "Earthquake Route"
The Dirty Route 2: As above, but at Browns Valley Rd to Left on J1 --> New Idria Rd. (unpaved) becomes Clear Creek Rd (unpaved and very gnarley) --> Coalinga Rd... as above.
There are, of course, thousands of other possibilities....
Enjoy,
Mike
