I might be interested in this too. I need a cheap bike to toss on my stationary. Don't really want to use the mountain bike (noisy) or the cross bike (nice New Belgium limited edition)

One bit of advice, if you are looking at older bikes and want to upgrade parts in the future, be careful. Some older bikes use weird thread dimensions on their bottom brackets and headsets that are not compatible with modern parts.

Yeah, I know they aren't, my friend and I call them "10 speeds" as an ode to our past, lol. I bet kids nowadays haven't ever even heard "10 speed" before in their lives.

Bikes are a money pit... I will never understand why people spend sooooooo much money on a part because it's 1oz lighter than the OEM part that costs 5x less.

Too all the elitist bikers out there, if you want to save weight eat more fiber! Your wallet will thank you. For what you're using the bike for you don't need a road bike, a mountain bike would work just fine too and you'd lose more weight because there is more resistance from the wider tires and different geometry. I'm actually quicker on a MTB than I am with a road bike because of the geometry of the frames... Road bike frames hurt my upper back soooooooo much after just a short ride (from being so hunched over) whereas a MTB you can sit more upright.

I used to be soooooooooooooooooooooooo into biking until I broke my arm in half (compound fracture of the radius and ulna) while riding my bike a year ago. Clipless pedals are the DEVIL!!! I used to love them until I ate **** from not being able to clip out and thus the broken arm. I had my pedals on the loosest setting and used them for almost 10 years without a single crash, then BAM! I wish I never would have used those damn pedals. Just a warning for everyone, lol.

<---- Very accident prone, so it could just be me failing at life.

Depends on individual fit (inseam, arm length) and frame geometry. I had a 54 that was a great fit and a 56 that was too small.

So true!!!!

But I can't say much cause I am as well. I bought a Specialized off a co-worker for pretty cheap. Got it home and rode it a little. Saw the front brake wasn't attached. So I attached it, proceeded to ride, hit the brake and flip over the handle bars in the driveway.

Of course, but as a general sizing, I was just saying that a 55 should be considered. Gotta ride it to know if it fits.

Personally, my body has a bit of a weird ratio. I have a 57cm bike right now and it is too big for me, but only the top tube length. It is more or less an average length seemingly for bikes, but even with a 60mm stem, I am reaching for the handlebars still. I have taken to get it fit and after a while of tweaking, we were able to get it better, but after about 60-70 miles, my back starts to feel it.

But I digress, this thread isn't about me, but about Rau.

Word. Before buying any bike, make sure it fits PROPERLY, or else your body is going to hurt and scream at you.

yes cutting weight is easier than buying lieghtwieght bikes, but the value of those lightweight parts depends upon the parts you using. lighter drive train and wheel components make acceleration significantly faster... but a CF seat? That's just ridiculous.

That being said, I have no room to talk talk though. My latest cross bike weights only 18lb with pedals and saddle

Sounds like a weak *** body or a bad fit. A properly sized and configured bike should be comfortable regardless of frame type/geometry/bar type.

Def a bad fit and bad back FTL. I've tried so many different road bikes over the years but every damn one of them hurts me soooo badly after just a few mins of riding. The geometry just screws me up. I wish they made road bikes for people that are taller than 6'6". (Story of my life, lol... Cars, planes, rollercoasters, etc... All made for people 5'8"! Damn you SHORT PEOPLE!!! DAMN YOU!
