I had dish for a couple of years, followed by U-Verse... I'm with comcast now and will never go back!
Dish is tough in my area because of tree's and multi story buildings. The beam path was super narrow so if the dish got tweaked even a little the signal was screwed.
Having a dish in the yard was PITA

My buddies' directTV at San Bruno blows big time, at least on the internet side. It would randomly go super slow for a few minutes, or sometimes even get disconnected altogether.

Yes, Direct TV and AT&T work together, but they aren't exclusive to each other, you just get a bit better deal bundling them.
I switched from Comcast to Dish because I hate Comcast. Never had an problems with Comcast internet, but the pricing for cable was ridiculous. HD PQ is actually better than Comcast and I have not had any issues with Dish. Definitely saved money too; almost half the price with Dish for the same thing at Comcast. I would never go back to Comcast either.

Only thing comcast has going for them is great internet for the price, tv on the other hand is way over priced.
DTV is great for HD and having all the channels you would normaly watch all on the basic package, their internet I heard sucks but I have never personaly tested it.
Uverse Internet was also good for the price but was unavailable In my area so I just went with astound, so far its been great.

Direct TV sucks nuts. I wish I had stayed with Dish. Those are our only two choices where I'm at.
Direct TV partners up with AT&T so they bundle you and it's "cheaper" but what you don't find out is that all money filters through AT&T so if you pay direct to direct tv it causes a big mess. I got my cable shut off once, my phone twice and got 3 months in a row of double bills before I figured out wtf was going on... and NO I did not get my money back. Idiots.
SO I guess what I really hate is AT&T.
THe coverage and channel selections for direct tv are fine but the dvr SUCKS. Dish's is way more intuitive and useful. For example... direct tv lists your events by year and day. That doesn't necessarily tell you if something is new or old. It's just when it got recorded. Dish gives you actual episode dates. So if you're trying to catch up with old episodes it's much easier to tell the old from the new before you open them.
Then the ff and rv buttons are RETARDED on direct tv. It's literally impossible to use. You fast forward and when you hit play it'll go back 10 seconds from when you actually hit play.
Stupid. Stupid. Stupid.
If you're going dish... get Dish.
