Japanese folks have mocked Mitsubishi (outside of the Evo line) for decades for good reason
Now we can add the Evo to the list
But to be honest, I'm actually kinda bummed since I do like Evo's

This is the first such instance of a pedal failure in an Evolution X that we’ve heard of, and considering that the press usually like to thoroughly abuse test new models when they come out we should have heard of this happening before if it were a common defect. Instead it appears that this pedal failure was an isolated incident

They're prolly using a plastic pedal because most all cars are drive-by-wire systems now. Since the throttle return spring that used to be pushing against the pedal isn't connected anymore, there isn't nearly as much force needed to push the pedal down. If the pedal doesn't need to be as strong as before, they can substitute plastic for the weight and cost savings.
Nowadays, the gas pedal is just a glorified foot-operated slot car controller. The real WTF here is "what kind of ham-fisted meathead stomps on his accelerator as hard as his brake pedal?"

These days a lot of cars come with plastic accelerator pedals...
