Am I reading the smog law right?

http://www.smogcheck.ca.gov/ftp/pdff...smog_check.pdf

So accoding to this chart... right now a 2002 WRX doesn't need biannual smog but needs to be smogged if sold.

A 2003 WRX doesn't need biannual smog and doesn't need to smogged if sold before the end of 2006? IE december 31st?

yeah, you're reading it right. my nieghbor, a smog tech, told me that to trasnfer titles on a car that is more than 4 years old, you have to smog. because it is 2006, you have to smog the 2002 or odler model cars, sans <1974.

goodluck, if you have to smog that is

See what confuses me is that the models don't correspond to years - the 03 EVO is 04 WRX for example.

And a lot of 02 wrx were bought in 2001....

The smog dates are based on when YOU bought the car new..not some much the model year..as some 2003 models were bought in mid 2002 and as late as 2004.

So say you bought the car Feb 1 2002..you won't not need to smog the car for a transfer of ownership till Feb 2 2006, you have a 4 year window..and your first REQUIRED smog would not be due till your tags were due for the year of 2008..or in other words Feb 2 2008 a 6 year window.

I would thing the make year of the car defines which year to go by. Basing it on when the car was purchased makes no sense to me (but for 90%) of the cases, I'm sure it's the same.

02 wrx is an 02 wrx regardless if you bought it in '01 or '03.

well I'm thinking it is based on when the car was purchased NEW from the dealer?

everytime I think about selling I get in my car and drive it and I'm in love with that damn bugeye... the bugeye really grows on you man.

when you smog is based on when the car was manufactured not the year it was bought.

04 bought in 03 is still an 04....so you would smog it when the 04 needs to be.
