advice needed on cali smog ref ticket
hey, so i got a smog ref ticket. its cvc 27156 (b). is this just a test to see if i will pass smog? my mods are currently, bov, intake, tbe, header, utec. its going to be a pita to swap it all back to stock and get it smogged. my question is do i need to swap out everything? or is there a cali smog shop that is more leanient than others? any advice will be greatly appreciated to save me some time.

CA Vehicle Code
27156. (a) No person shall operate or leave standing upon any
highway any motor vehicle which is a gross polluter, as defined in
Section 39032.5 of the Health and Safety Code.
(b) No person shall operate or leave standing upon any highway any
motor vehicle which is required to be equipped with a motor vehicle
pollution control device under Part 5 (commencing with Section 43000)
of Division 26 of the Health and Safety Code or any other certified
motor vehicle pollution control device required by any other state
law or any rule or regulation adopted pursuant to that law, or
required to be equipped with a motor vehicle pollution control device
pursuant to the National Emission Standards Act (42 U.S.C. Secs.
1857f-1 to 1857f-7, inclusive) and the standards and regulations
adopted pursuant to that federal act, unless the motor vehicle is
equipped with the required motor vehicle pollution control device
which is correctly installed and in operating condition. No person
shall disconnect, modify, or alter any such required device.
(c) No person shall install, sell, offer for sale, or advertise
any device, apparatus, or mechanism intended for use with, or as a
part of, any required motor vehicle pollution control device or
system which alters or modifies the original design or performance of
any such motor vehicle pollution control device or system.

I just went through this earlier this year. You'll have to take it to a smog ref and yes, they're a hell alot more strict than a regular smog shop. I sat there for over 2 hours. So plan on spending some time there. What a P.I.T.A.!
They go through your car with a fine-toothed comb. Any part that is not oem (trust me, they know) must have a C.A.R.B. number. They will actually go online and verify. So you're gonna have to put all your stock parts back on. I did however leave my TurboXS uppipe on. But he did check for the O2 sensor. Any aftermarket vacuume lines, turbo inlet and intercooler hoses will make it fail also unless they have the C.A.R.B. approval.
Or you can just pay the full bail amount and be done with it. Good luck!

Umm.. go to the Sequioa State Ref in Fremont, the guy is cool, and yes you'd probably have to replace everything back to stock. They hook this electrical unit that reads everything in your car, so if you're runnin' with a utec, they'll see that. The actual process isn't too bad, it's the paper work that keeps you there for two hours.

yea i had a few questions as well. I dont mind putting turboback, manifold, intake, intercooler or other pieces like that back to stock if i was to get a state ref. But do these guys really know what to look for. Could they tell i have a vf30 compared to stock turbo or sti injectors vs stock?

well I guess no Stage 1 for me until I have a Cusco turbo heat shield and a couple heat shields off of some cats welded on the TBE prior to install

my fine was a little less than $300. for NOT fixing the problem. So, instead of going through the hassle of putting my ride back to stock...I paid it, and still registered my car a few months after.
Just pay the fine...all they want is your money anyway!!!

1) emission equipments
2) EGR valves
I probably might have missed out on something but this is what I can recall from my past experiences.

Header..hell no..back to factory..intake should be ok as long it upstream of ur MAF meter..BOV...depends..but i think u will have to replace that also...
Refs r pretty much the same...all of them r state paid smog techs, whos jobs it is to go pick apart ur car...
