All cars after 1986 are required to have a third brake light. That is a Federal safety feature. In most states it is not illegal to remove it, but I don't remember what CVC says about it. I believe if it was equipped from the factory you are required to have one. The other issue is accidents and insurance. If you're rear-ended and the light is missing or inoperable the other insurance company may refuse to pay you. It's happened before.

I didn't find any mention of the third light, you might be off the hook here in CA
But the last paragraph refers to this:
Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 108 (49 C.F.R. 571.108)
And I didn't feel like looking through all of the federal code, might be a gotcha in there somewhere...

That third light does come in handy and all newer model cars have it, therefore I would say yes it is the law. Not to mention it also aids for larger cars, i.e trucks who sometimes cant see your rear lights.
Here is a test, trust me I did it before going wingless myself. Walk out into a parking lot and find how many cars you can see without a third light.

IIRC you dont have to have a third brake light.
But both rear facing brake lights are required to be working. (taillights)
as for the mirror issue. You are requred to have a Driver Side Mirror and one other. Passenger mirror is not required.

sorry if i didnt make it clear, but i own a 00 2.5rs. i am only trading the spoiler. for those who are not familiar, GC's dont have a 3rd brake light in the rear car dash, it is on the spoiler instead. if i take off my spoiler, no more 3rd brake light.
i've also seen some ppl from california in classifieds sell replica spoilers for 98-01 2.5rs's with no 3rd brake light, and i highly doubt that they have a 3rd brake light wired inside their rear dash.
lets just hope theres no trouble driving wingless for a week or so. ill make sure ill drive mostly during the day. lol

i swapped trunks with a wingless '06 wrx and didn't bother swapping the 3rd brake light, so now he has 4 brake lights.....he didn't seem to care.
