30 mile Colin McRae tribute convoy smashes world records

More than 1000 Subaru owners and thousands more fans have celebrated the life of Colin McRae this weekend.
A convoy, which at its peak stretched 30 miles with an estimated 1100 Subaru cars, left Colin’s home town of Lanark on Saturday morning, led by his father Jimmy McRae. Nine hours and 300 miles later, it arrived at Prodrive’s headquarters in Banbury, having been cheered along the way by thousands of fans who stood on every available motorway bridge on route.

“Literally every bridge had people waving and cheering us along with many hanging the Saltire from the railings.” said Grant Hendry, who led the McRae Gathering convoy. “It turned what was an already memorable event into a truly amazing and emotional occasion.”

The convoy re-gathered at Prodrive’s headquarters in Banbury on Sunday morning, before being led up the M40 by Colin McRae’s original 1996 Impreza rally car. In a fitting finale to the event, a sign almost half a mile long and made up of 1086 Subarus spelt out COLIN MCRAE and the Scottish Saltire in a new official Guinness World Record – smashing the previous record by more than 800 cars. The cars then broke a second Guinness World Record by creating the largest parade of cars as they left the Prodrive test track.

It is estimated that the event has raised nearly £40,000 for the McRae charities.

Cheesy but true...

This just goes to show how awesome the Subaru Community is and not to mention how great Colin McRae really was.

I am still in amazed by how McRae had rolled his car and still took second at last years X Games. Not to mention all of his other feats and contributions to the world of motorsports.

Wow, their meets are outstanding and put ours to shame, but this, WOW, beyond words I can express.

Colin McRae was the original rally driver that I watched back when I first learned about Rallying in the mid 90s, his passion to win made him my #1 driver and have always loved watching him race, even in his later years where he wasn't as great as he was back in the 90s. Then when he was on the X-games where he flipped that car and kept going, just as a stunt to show off was incredibly bad ***!

Its really sad that we've lost 3 great drivers in recent years.

First came the USA's best driver, Mark Lovell of Subaru who died when he crashed into a tree which came in direct impact with the driver side door leaving no chance of survival. Marks co-driver Roger Freeman was also killed instantly in the horrific accident. it was a devastating blow for Subaru USA's rally team and for all Subaru and rally fans alike.

Second came Richard Burns' death. Richard didn't die during a rally, even though one would assume that his death would have probably been due to a horrific crash, however, no safety equipment could have saved Richard from the cancer that plagued his brain. I can't remember exactly what he had, but basically had some brain tumors that spread like crazy. Richard was in his early 30s when this happened and he left behind a HUGE fan base. Richard was a top driver in the WRC circuit so it was devastating to everyone who was into rallying. I was so saddened that day, After Colin, Richard was my fav driver of all time and Rallying really wont be the same without him and Colin.

Third, and hopefully final, Colin Mcrae passed away recently when his private mini helicopter crashed from a few hundred feet up killing him, his son, and two other folks (right, 2 others?) that were onboard. I think Colin's death was the most tragic because his little son was on board and killed alongside his father. I can't even imagine what his wife went through after that, losing your son and husband at once? Ug, what a horrible tragedy for his family, and EVERY rally fan on this planet. Colin was the best known driver, not because he's pretty like David Beckham, but because he was an INCREDIBLE driver that stopped at nothing to win which is why it was so great to watch him race. Yeah, he crashed a lot, but he crashed because he was pushing 110% ALL THE TIME... An amazing driver and a great guy, him, Richard, and Mark are all in Rally heaven spinning donuts around each other... eheheh. Yeah, they will def be missed by all.
