"why the **** are they stopping the ball game."
I should have been at Candlestick with my brother at the time, but we gave our tickets away for Game 2, and instead went to game 4 to watch the sweep

I was at home with the family and then the pictures were shaking and we could hear the china in the pantry bouncing around.
Very little damage for us in the Hayward hills. Pretty much sitting on solid rock.

Wow Jansen is my age?
Well I was also 8 and was at home watching TV when it happened. Then ran between a door for cover. I remember when my dad came back he said that he thought there was something wrong with his car or the new tires he just put on his car since he felt the earthquake while driving.
I mainly remember watching the news of the footage of cars driving on the bay bridge where a section fell and cars driving into it.

I was 4 and was helping my dad clean the gutters on the roof of our house.
Needless to say as soon as it started shaking he grabbed me under his arm and ran to the middle of the roof and hugged it.
Don't remember much after that - I remember the power going off for a few hours and having to light candles and lanterns. I think I was sad that I was missing out on cartoons.

I was nine, sitting at the bus stop with my mom in belmont when we saw the waves in the ground coming toward us. Riding that out scared the **** out of me, especially being able to see it coming! My best friend's dad was on the bridge, and passed the section that fell seconds before it did. All he saw was cars dropping behind him.
The worst part was riding out all the aftershocks. I just wanted it to end

I was living in Cordelia and my 6 month old son and me were hunkering down to watch the ball game and then all hell broke loose. Right after wards, I stuck a blank tape in the recorder and started recording all the Bay Bridge / Cypress news.

I was 19. I was working at a grocery store up in the foothills above Sacramento.
Someone said.. oh my.. we just had an earthquake. None of us felt it. Then the news started rolling in.. oh crap..
My Dad lived here in Watsonville. I stayed up all night trying to get ahold of him. It was sureal to watch the news and see places I knew that were just piles of rubble.
We moved down here about a year later. There are still vacant lots and other signs of the quake around town.

You guys make me feel old...
I was working in my lab (biotech) at the old Cetus Corp (now part of Chiron) over in Emeryville. The lab was located in an old converted shipping/receiving area. Our door in was through the old shipping dock.
When it started shaking we all ducked under the lab benches except for this one woman; she was about to bolt out the shipping dock door. We'd grabbed her and dragged her under the lab benches with us, and she was damned lucky that we did. We heard the all the windows in the two stories above us popout and crash to the ground just outside the door. She would've gotten shredded.
Obviously we were all done with work for the day, so we were sent home. Being that I lived in SF at the time, and that all the bridges were closed, I had to drive home via San Jose. I was lucky that I had a full tank of gas at the time.

I was nine and outside riding my bike. I was messing around and ran into a street lamp. Looked up at the street lamp and watched it sway back and forth and noticing the ground shake. For a second, I thought I had super awesome powers.

I was 13. I was at my cousin's place in Hayward picking up his old RC car he was giving me. We were in the garage and the car literally started bouncing. He yelled, "Get outside, quick." We ran outside and the overhead power lines were swaying BIG TIME. He yelled, "Get back inside!"
The sliding glass doors were bowing for like two hours afterwards.
My Dad was out of the country on business and all the news made it sound and look like CA had fallen into the sea. He couldn't get ahold of us for two days.
