I use this filter wrench, it will destroy the filter if you tighten it hard enough

Dang dude, I have one of those wrenches if you need it. I had to buy one for the first oil change on my trucks new motor. It freakng crushed the oil filter due to the torque I had to use to get it off.

Edit: nevermind just saw the second page... glad it worked out!

Yeah I had that oil filter wrench on the end of a 24" breaker bar, and it crushed the oil filter like a soda can before it loosend up @ all.

I do have to correct my original statement that had have every oil filter wrench.

Just from a technical standpoint, what do they use at the factory to put the oil filters on, it must be an airtool of some sort.

That's because otherwise the oil filter will leak - it's a Fram after all. Subaru really screwed the pooch on that one - hiring the cheapest company with the crappiest design to build the filters...

Thankfully I have half a case of the black AA100 filters that I purchased before they converted to the crappy Fram filters.

Best $15 I've spent at kragen. Its true, it will destroy the oil filter, but its not like you are going to reuse it.

Same thing happened on my new WRX, I ended up punching a couple holes and turning it out with 90degree needle nose pliers.

The cap style oil filter wrench I got for the Subaru blue oil filters strangely doesn't fit the black ones.

*harumph*

This kind has always worked for me... way better than pliers.

And because you get to use your 3/8 socket wrench on it (and all your socket wrench extenders, etc) it always works easiest.
