If you are scratching together the budget for a WRX, go with the newest one you can. Hardcore tuning like doing a swap always costs more than what you plan on. Go with the warranteed (at least for a while ) car.

A GC/GM can be lightened in all the same ways as a WRX, but most people won't go too far with it for a daily driven car. As for running better, I don't see how. And how is buying a $20,000 WRX to mod cheaper than starting with a $12,000 RS? I'll reiterate though, that if you only have one car, go ahead and start with a WRX. It's just easier. If you wanna build a race car from scratch, or have an angle on a good deal for an older Impreza though, go that route.

Then blow the tranny, find out the entire engine block is leaking, as all the seals have blown from to much power. Realize you want a reliable engine. Drop a WRX engine into an RS. After 2 years you have a beast. JDM engine with AVCS, 9:1 compression and a full 4.444 drivetrain, along with many awesome mods...

I choose number 2, and I am still glad I did. Though I spent a hell of a lot more.
Look at it this way Bill- when I turbo my EJ25, you'll get to tune it. And when I blow it up, you'll get to tune my Cobb shortblock too.
