exhaust pop!
I have a 00' rs with a vf22 turbo and an open exhaust. I was wondering if anyone knew if it is the cat-less exhaust or something else causing this? The pop isn't loud like a backfire just an annoying pop between shifts. Any info would be great...Thanks.

the pop, is because you have very little back pressure from having an open exhaust.. You can hear this on large V8's that are piped... when they let off the gas they have a poping noise.. smae thing just on a smaller scale.

Is your exhaust new? After a while your "new" exhaust will become a little louder, which is ok, becuase the boxer engine sounds pretty damn beefy. If you reall y want to get rid of the pop, you will have to INCREASE back pressure, be restricting your exhast.. Which will decrease HP... The pop will eventually go away.

Usaly a pop is from some one who dosnt know how to weld. Small holes in your system can couse poping noises. very rairly is poping due to not enugh back presure especaly on a car that has a turbo? realy what dose it need back pressure for? IT DOSNT plus an engine NA or Blown only needs 1 lb back pressure to run and every ft of tube EQ. 1lb check the welds and or ditch the clamps thats your problem!

My car pops between almost every shift, although I'm not turbo'd yet. I have almost the same setup as N/A, brola headers, apexi N1 catback, but i also have an injen CAI. The poping started once I put the catback on, and at the time it was my only mod.
N/A, you really think the car is that loud, I put my silencer in and can barely hear it. Maybe I'm just used to the retarded loud civic's and neon's in my area...that also sound like a bee in a tin can

"a bee in a tin can" is the best one that I've heard yet. I use to own a neon running 9psi and the only thing that made me stand out was my vibrant exhaust that gave it a decently throaty sound. But now everyone has some form of sunfire, saturn, scivic/accord/integra, or neon and I'm a ten times happy that I not only found a rarer car but an all-around better automobile.
On topic...I've found that it sometimes depends on how you drive. I have borla catback, random tech. high-flow cat, and weapon r CAI. I very rarely have pop and I've been on this set up for about 6 months. However, my girl and a friend of mine both get pop between gears and on deceleration. What about that?

it's the extra fuel not burned
When you shift, if you are like most people you partially or completely left off the accelerator. Once you let off the accelerator the intake manifold butterflies close and reduce the amount of air pumped into the combustion chamber. With the decrease in air available for the combustion process and the increased fuel you get a somewhat rich mixture and typically too rich to be fully burned in the combustion process. This leads to unburned fuel entering the hot exhaust system and igniting in the exhaust where you can hear it.
Typically you would have a catalytic converter in the exhaust that has the multi-path honeycomb catalyst that will spread the POP so much that you will not hear it normally.
You have a few things to can do:
1) Install a high flow catalytic converter so you don't hear the pops, and ensure you are not causing undesired pollution.
2) Change your driving style so you are not letting off the accelerator so much that you encounter the rich condition.
3) Install and configure a computer system that adjusts the fuel map more quickly by monitoring the TPS (Throttle Positioning Sensor) and the Air/Fuel Meter.
4) Ensure you didn't forget to install your Air/Fuel Meter
5) Pray to the car gods for a car that doesn't pop =)
Hope this helps,

Yeah, just check your exhaust welds, as this will cause undesired richness in your system. If all is well, wait a few weeks and if it doesn't go away, pursue the issue further. My exhaust popped quite a bit for a couple of weeks. No point fixing it if it's just a temporary prob.

Upon further review...
I bet you have an atmospheric BOV. If so, try changing to a 50/50 or 100% recirc BOV like the stock WRX piece. This will stop the car from running so rich in between shifts, as well as helping you spool a little faster.
