Audi A6 bi-xenon e-code headlight mod for RHD JDM headlights (56k beware)
In researching different ways to make the Subaru JDM headlights more appropriate for use on our streets, there were 3 choices:
1. Grind JDM shields like this (Scooby mods link) -great idea but, IMHO- HID kits don't work very well with halogen projectors
2. Sell JDM's and get EDM's - No HID option, again IMHO- HID kits don't work very well with halogen projectors
3. Swap projectors with Audi A-6 E-code Bi-xenon projectors
I chose the 3rd option, and upgraded to a bi-xenon HID setup to boot!
Quick FAQs:
Audi bi-xenon E-code projectors
OEM BMW E-38 Ballasts (I used these because of the rubber boots)
Phillips D2S bulbs
Subaru RHD JDM Headlights
One Oven set to 220 for 20 minutes (thanks Koji for mod idea)
One dremel wielding fool
Lots of guts !
I will post more pics as I finish the project
Here are some initial pics:
Just starting out Audi projectors vs JDMs
Ready for the oven, gulp...
Side view Audi Projectors
Closeup to shield- note e-code (edm) z cutoff pattern
- Peace and more to come....

WOW. That's all I can say. I REALLY hope this works out well for you. Are you going to grind the housing so that the beam pattern works for people who drive on the right side of the road? I also hope you don't have problems with fogging on the inside of the lens after you seal them back up. Good luck, and be sure to keep us posted on the results.
And some  for your courage.

Okay now I'm confused. You said that the HID kits don't work well with the halogen projectors, but aren't you using the JDM RHD projectors?
Also, can you post a couple more pics of the A6 light bulb holder thingy compared to the stock one? How hard was it to get the A6 light to attach to the housing?
One last request: will you show some pics of how the light itself lines up with the plastic thing (with lines on it where it looks like you're going to grind it) in your last pic? Thanks, and you rule.

Razor, Thanks for the kind words, I guess the RHDers can just buy the OEM STI HID headlights.
This mod is so I can use my JDM RHD headlights here in the Yay Area without blinding everyone.
And thanks for the  !!!
A couple more pics for tonight!!
brackets to be trimmed
Lens Compario- JDM Subaru left vs. Audi/ Hella e-code right
Jdm Subaru basket left vs. Audi / hella e-code right
Laterz...

Note these new projectors are not halogen projectors they are bi-xenon e-code projectors. They are specificaly designed by hella for xenon lights.
In other words I'll trash the projectors from the JDM lights unless someone here wants 'em to grind for their own lights. Lemme know!

This is so cool I'm crying! I asked about HID retrofits for the WRX months ago but this is the first time I've seen someone attempt it. Do you need anything else to get the bi-xenon system working? I know on BMWs, the "flick/flash" system still uses the halogen highs.

Funny you mentioned this, the unique thing about this mod is that you can use the "standard" halogen high beam or do like I did and get a set of Bi-xenon hid projectors and have both a HID high beam AND a halogen highbeam!
You don't need anything but another 12V trigger (I used the stock highbeam 12v) and I also used a diode to protect the stock headlight switch against "back spikes".
Look at the pics the hella projectors they have a solenoid that controls a movable projector shield. (note the small gauge wires from the control solenoid) also note the coil. When you apply 12V to the solenoid the shield is pulled down, thus projecting the beam "higher" = High beam. (remember physics, everything in the lens in upsidedown and backwards)
Note if you use a non-bixenon projector than you can use the stock halogen high beams, I just think it's awsome to have HID xenon highbeams and halogen high beams as backup.

Love these bananas!!!!

I wonder if the bi-xenon system solves the "unfixable" retrofit problem of the HIDs cutting out when the high-beams are flicked (is that what it is? I remember there was something you just had to live with if you separated the hi/low and used a harness converter)...either way, sounds like it's coming along great! I'm sure there are a lot of people watching this!
About how much was it for everything?

Kenn,
You can fix this "unfixable" problem by wiring the lowbeam lights (aka the HID ballasts) at the headlight switch itself instead of the stock 9007 headlight connectors. The high beams can be wired to the stock connector. This allows the low beams to REMAIN ON when you turn on your highbeams or when you flash to pass. Here is a diagram that I stole from a great HID web resource (Automotive lighting FAQs ) . If you look at the WRX headlight wiring diagram you can find this point under the steeting column. just tap in there and run a trigger wire to the ballast relays. If you have any questions please let me know.
