1st Tranny Oil Change...Metal Shavings...OK?
Well I finally got the correct fluids from Summit and did the change on Friday; 3 qt of Redline MT-90 and .7 qt of Lightweight Shockproof. I can't believe the difference it has made. The shifts are smoother and the gears engages better. FWIW, my car has 36+K on it, and was bought new with 7 miles on the OD.
I've read that "small" shavings of metal are "normal" for the Subaru tranny. It's not clear to me of how "small" these shavings should be or within the "OK" tolerance of normal-wear-and-tear-of-breaking-in. I did find "small" shavings attached to the drain plug. There were about a dozen or so shaving pieces along with some slugh of oil/grease on the drain plug. These shavings are about 1/4" in length and has the same diameter as a piece of hair. The old oil was free of any particles.
So my question is, are these shavings OK or should I start saving for a RA gear set?

The shavings that you are describing is normal subaru tranny wear. But at any rate I would start saving for the R/A gearset and a clutch. No sense in waiting for the brick to fall. In overview the tranny is the weakest part, so throw in a *****in' gearset and have a kick *** clutch and your car will be bulletproof.

The first change on the transmission will show a lot of stuff on the magnetic drain plug, it is normal. Next time you change it, you should see far less of the same. At least that was the case with me, but I do mine every 15K...because I'm paranoid.
